Shamli, Uttar Pradesh, August 26, 2025 – The redevelopment of Shamli Railway Station, part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, is in its final stages, promising a modernized travel hub for the 6,500 daily passengers it serves. With a budget of Rs 25.5 crore, the project aims to transform the 44-year-old station into a facility that blends comfort, accessibility, and local heritage, though delays due to labor shortages have pushed the completion timeline.
Launched in August 2023 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who laid the foundation stone for 508 stations nationwide, the Shamli project focuses on passenger-friendly upgrades. The main building is nearly complete, with only minor finishing work remaining. A 12-meter-wide foot overbridge (FOB) is close to completion, awaiting lift installation and final touches. Platform shelters are 70% done, with roof sheeting still in progress, and the parking area is being elevated to improve access. The station now features Divyangjan-friendly amenities, including ramps, tactile paths, low-height ticket counters, and water booths, ensuring inclusivity.
“The new station will feel like a breath of fresh air,” said Anil Sharma, a daily commuter. “Better entry points and clean toilets will make a big difference.” The design incorporates local culture, with plans for a facade reflecting Shamli’s heritage, aligning with the scheme’s goal of enhancing passenger experience while preserving regional identity.
However, challenges remain. A shortage of workers and supervisors has delayed the project, initially set to finish by December 2024. “We’re working hard, but it’ll take three more months,” said Northern Railway’s DRM Sukhvinder Singh. The main gate has been temporarily closed, with passengers using an alternate route near the GRP station, causing minor inconvenience.
The redevelopment is part of Uttar Pradesh’s broader push to revamp 55 stations under the Amrit Bharat scheme, including key hubs like Varanasi and Kanpur Central. Shamli’s upgrades, costing Rs 15.5 crore for the FOB alone, aim to ease congestion and improve efficiency for the district’s growing commuter base. As the project nears completion, residents are hopeful the revamped station will boost connectivity and local pride.
