Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, August 7, 2025 – In a heartfelt move to support widowed women across Uttar Pradesh, the state government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has released ₹1,115 crore under the Widow Pension Scheme. This financial aid, credited to the bank accounts of over 36 lakh women, comes just in time for the festive season, including Raksha Bandhan and Janmashtami, bringing relief and joy to many families.
The Widow Pension Scheme, part of the Samajik Suraksha Pension Yojana (SSPY), aims to provide financial security to widows living below the poverty line. Each beneficiary receives ₹1,000 per month, directly transferred to their Aadhaar-linked bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. This ensures that the money reaches the right hands without delays or middlemen. The scheme supports widows who meet specific criteria, such as being permanent residents of Uttar Pradesh, having an annual family income below ₹46,080 in rural areas or ₹56,460 in urban areas, and providing a valid death certificate of their spouse.
This latest disbursement, announced on August 6, 2025, has been described as a “festive gift” by the state government, highlighting its commitment to empowering vulnerable women. The funds are meant to help widows cover daily expenses, medical needs, or even invest in small ventures for a more stable future. For many, this pension is a lifeline, offering dignity and independence during challenging times.
The process to apply for the scheme is straightforward. Widows can visit the official SSPY portal sspy-up.gov.in or their local Common Service Centre (CSC) to submit applications. Required documents include a husband’s death certificate, income certificate, and proof of residency. Once approved, beneficiaries can check their status or pension list online by selecting their district, block, and village on the portal. The government updates the list yearly and sometimes quarterly to ensure accuracy and transparency.
This initiative is part of Uttar Pradesh’s broader efforts to support marginalized groups, including senior citizens and persons with disabilities, through various pension schemes. The state’s Social Welfare Department has been praised for its efficient handling of these programs, ensuring timely payments. For instance, similar efforts in other states, like Bihar’s recent pension hike to ₹1,100 for over 1 crore beneficiaries, show a growing focus on social welfare across India.
As festivals approach, this financial boost is expected to bring smiles to countless households. “This money means I can buy gifts for my grandchildren this Raksha Bandhan,” said a beneficiary from Varanasi. Stories like hers reflect the scheme’s impact, offering not just funds but also hope and a sense of care from the government.
