LUCKNOW, Uttar Pradesh, July 30, 2025 – The Lucknow police have rolled out a bold new plan called “Project Safe Ride” to make public transport safer, especially for women. Launched on Tuesday, July 29, the initiative requires all auto-rickshaw and e-rickshaw drivers in the city to verify their identities by August 31, 2025, or face tough action, including vehicle seizure. The move comes as part of Uttar Pradesh’s broader push for safer streets and aligns with the state’s Mission Shakti program.
Under Project Safe Ride, every auto and e-rickshaw must display a unique QR code linked to the driver’s and owner’s details, which passengers can scan to confirm their identity. The verification process involves registering on the Lucknow police website, where owners must submit vehicle details, driver’s license, fitness certificates, and character certificates. “This will help passengers feel secure knowing who’s driving them,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Upendra Agarwal at a press conference. With around 56,000 e-rickshaws and 18,000 autos operating in Lucknow, the police aim to complete verifications within a month.
The initiative responds to growing concerns about crimes involving public transport, including harassment and theft. Recent incidents, like a robbery reported in Gomti Nagar last month, have pushed authorities to act fast. The QR code system will let passengers check a driver’s photo and credentials instantly, reducing risks. However, the e-rickshaw union has called the rules tough to follow, claiming they could lead to harassment of drivers.
Project Safe Ride builds on Lucknow’s Safe City Project, which has already installed over 1,600 CCTV cameras across the city. The police are also integrating this initiative with existing women’s safety measures, like pink booths and helplines. With many praising the effort but some drivers worried about tight deadlines.
The campaign, running until August 31, 2025, is a test for Lucknow’s ability to balance safety and practicality. If successful, it could set a model for other cities. For now, police are urging drivers to register quickly to avoid penalties and keep Lucknow’s streets safe for all.
