GORAKHPUR, Uttar Pradesh, July 29, 2025 – In a major administrative shake-up, IAS officer Deepak Meena has been appointed the new District Magistrate (DM) of Gorakhpur, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s home district. The transfer, announced on Monday, July 28, is part of a broader reshuffle involving 23 IAS officers across Uttar Pradesh, aimed at boosting governance and development.
Deepak Meena, a 2011-batch IAS officer from Rajasthan, takes over from Krishna Karunesh, who served as Gorakhpur’s DM for three years. Meena, an IIT Kharagpur graduate with a degree in electrical engineering, brings a strong track record. Before this, he was DM of Ghaziabad, where he earned praise for managing the 2025 Kanwar Yatra with 200 CCTV cameras and 750 civil defense volunteers. He also led a probe into illegal drainage operations in Ghaziabad’s Prateek Grand City, addressing sewage flooding issues. His daily public hearings from 10 AM to 2 PM were widely appreciated for tackling local grievances.
Meena’s appointment to Gorakhpur, a politically significant district, is seen as a nod to his administrative skills. “His experience will help drive development here,” said a local BJP leader. The officer’s past roles include DM of Meerut, Siddharthnagar, and Shravasti, as well as Chief Development Officer in Agra and Bulandshahr. His focus on public engagement and infrastructure oversight is expected to benefit Gorakhpur’s ongoing projects, like the city’s new sports facilities and tourism initiatives tied to the Ram temple.
The reshuffle also saw other key changes: Manish Kumar Verma moved from Gautam Buddh Nagar to Prayagraj as DM, while Medha Roopam took charge as Noida’s DM. Posts on X, reflected excitement over Meena’s appointment, with users calling it a “reward” for his effective work in Ghaziabad. However, some expressed concerns about ensuring continuity in Gorakhpur’s development plans.
Meena is expected to assume charge soon, with a focus on improving civic amenities and supporting the state’s Mission Shakti for women’s empowerment. As Gorakhpur gears up for major events, all eyes are on how Meena will shape the district’s future.
