Lucknow, August 10, 2025 – With Independence Day just days away, the Uttar Pradesh government has launched an ambitious plan to distribute 60 lakh national flags across urban low-income areas as part of the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign. The state cabinet, in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday, approved a proposal to use Rs 12 crore from the State Finance Commission to fund this massive flag distribution effort, aimed at sparking patriotism across the state.
The campaign, a key part of the nationwide push to honor India’s independence, will see flags provided free of cost to homes, particularly in urban poor communities. The flags will be made by Self-Help Groups (SHGs) linked to the State Urban Livelihoods Mission under the Urban Development Department. This initiative is expected to create jobs for nearly 29,000 women, giving a boost to local economies while promoting the vision of an ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India). “This is more than just flags-it’s about uniting people and empowering women,” said Amrit Abhijat, Principal Secretary of the Urban Development Department.
To ensure the campaign runs smoothly, district-level committees led by District Magistrates will oversee planning and execution. These committees will work with public representatives, student groups, civil society, and residents to make the program a success. The campaign also includes special cleanliness drives at martyrs’ memorials and historical sites, aligning with the theme “Swachh Nagari – Jhanda Nagari” (Clean City – Flag City). Events like tiranga rallies, cultural programs, and selfie booths will encourage community participation from August 13 to 15.
The ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign aims to break last year’s record of unfurling 4.5 crore flags in Uttar Pradesh, with a target of 4.75 crore flags this year. Schools, colleges, hospitals, and commercial buildings will join in, painting the state in the tricolour’s shades. The government also plans to promote central and state welfare schemes during the campaign, spreading awareness about development programs.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath urged citizens to join the movement, calling the national flag a symbol of unity and pride. “Let’s make every home a part of this celebration,” he said. As preparations ramp up, the state is buzzing with excitement for this patriotic initiative.
