Lucknow – On the 26th Kargil Vijay Diwas, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath paid heartfelt tributes to the brave soldiers who gave their lives during the 1999 Kargil War. Speaking at a special event at the Kargil Shaheed Smriti Vatika in Lucknow, he said, “Our soldiers sacrificed everything to keep the nation’s unity and integrity intact.” The day was marked with solemn ceremonies across the state, honoring the heroes who fought against all odds to protect India. Here’s the latest on the commemorations, with updates as the day progresses.
A Day of Pride and Remembrance
The Kargil Vijay Diwas, observed every year on July 26, celebrates India’s victory in the 1999 Kargil War against Pakistani intruders. The war, fought in the harsh terrains of Kargil, Ladakh, saw Indian soldiers reclaim strategic peaks despite extreme cold and enemy fire. At the Lucknow event, CM Yogi highlighted the courage of the soldiers, saying, “The Kargil War was forced upon us by Pakistan, but our brave soldiers gave a fitting reply through Operation Vijay. Even in minus 50-degree temperatures, they stood firm and made the enemy retreat.”
Yogi honored the families of the martyrs, presenting them with mementos and expressing gratitude for their sacrifice. “The nation will always be indebted to these heroes,” he said, emphasizing that their bravery continues to inspire every Indian. The event saw participation from veterans, families of fallen soldiers, and local residents, all united in paying tribute to the nation’s defenders.
A Challenging Victory
The Kargil War, which began in May 1999, was a response to Pakistani forces and militants infiltrating Indian territory to disrupt the Srinagar-Leh highway and isolate Siachen Glacier. Named Operation Vijay, India’s military campaign lasted over two months, culminating in victory on July 26, 1999. Around 527 Indian soldiers lost their lives, and over 1,300 were injured, but their sacrifice ensured the enemy was driven out.
CM Yogi recalled the challenges of the war, noting the difficult terrain and weather. “Kargil was a place where survival itself was tough, yet our soldiers fought with unmatched courage,” he said. He also took a dig at Pakistan, saying their “cowardly tactics” could not stand against India’s might. Yogi credited the leadership of then-Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who refused to bow to international pressure, ensuring India’s resolve remained unshaken.
Honoring the Heroes
Across Uttar Pradesh, events were held to honor the martyrs. In Lucknow, the Kargil Shaheed Smriti Vatika saw emotional moments as families shared stories of their loved ones. A cultural program by NCC cadets included patriotic songs and dances, leaving the audience teary-eyed.
The Indian Army also launched a nationwide campaign to visit the homes of martyrs’ families, offering gratitude letters and mementos. In Uttar Pradesh, army teams reached out to families in various districts, including those of Gorkha soldiers from Nepal who served in the Indian Army. “This gesture means a lot to us,” said Sunita Devi, whose brother was martyred in Kargil.
A Message of Unity
CM Yogi used the occasion to call for national unity, warning against divisive forces. “Some political groups try to divide us for their own gain, but Kargil Vijay Diwas teaches us to stay united for a stronger India,” he said. He also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, stating that India’s zero-tolerance policy on terrorism has made the country stronger. “Whether it was Pulwama or Kargil, our forces have shown the world that India will not tolerate threats,” Yogi added, referencing the swift response to the 2019 Pulwama attack.
A Lasting Legacy
Kargil Vijay Diwas is more than a celebration of military victory; it’s a reminder of the sacrifices made for India’s sovereignty. As CM Yogi put it, “The courage of our soldiers is a beacon for future generations.”
As the nation remembers its heroes, the message is clear: their sacrifice will never be forgotten, and their legacy will continue to unite the country.
