Balrampur, July 28, 2025 – A horrific incident at Vimla Vikram Hospital in Pachpedwa, Balrampur, has left the society in shock. A 28-year-old woman, admitted for treatment of fever and weakness, was allegedly raped by a hospital staff member after being sedated. The accused, Yogesh Pandey, a nursing staff member, was arrested within 48 hours of the crime, police confirmed on Sunday. The case has sparked outrage, with locals demanding stricter safety measures in hospitals.
The incident occurred on the night of July 25, 2025, when the woman was under medical observation in the hospital’s ICU. According to police reports, Pandey, a resident of Madhyanagar, Bhaisahwa, injected the woman with a sedative around 4:00 AM, rendering her unconscious. He then assaulted her. The survivor regained consciousness during the attack and raised an alarm, causing Pandey to flee. She immediately informed her family, who filed a complaint with the Pachpedwa police station.
Police acted swiftly, arresting Pandey near Bhathar Bridge on July 27, following a tip-off. A case was registered under sections 64(2)e and 123 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which cover rape and related offenses. Superintendent of Police Vikas Kumar is overseeing the investigation, with CCTV footage from the hospital serving as key evidence. “The accused has been taken into custody, and we are ensuring a thorough probe,” Kumar said. The survivor’s medical examination has been completed, and her statement is being recorded to strengthen the case.
The hospital, reportedly linked to a former Samajwadi Party minister, has faced scrutiny over its safety protocols. This incident has reignited discussions about the safety of women in medical facilities across Uttar Pradesh. Call for mandatory background checks for hospital staff and better monitoring systems is gaining momentum. The hospital administration has suspended Pandey and promised full cooperation with the police, but many question why such lapses occurred in the first place.
As the investigation continues, the survivor and her family are receiving support from local authorities. The case has drawn comparisons to past incidents, like a 2020 rape case in Balrampur, where a woman died after being assaulted. Authorities have assured strict action, but for now, the focus remains on justice for the survivor and ensuring such tragedies are not repeated.
