Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, August 3: Uttar Pradesh is set to create history by becoming the first state in the country to launch an AI-powered road safety pilot project, aimed at reducing accidents and improving traffic discipline. The initiative will begin as a pilot run in selected districts and is part of a joint effort between the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and the Uttar Pradesh government.
The official launch is expected in the coming weeks, with trials already underway in parts of Noida and Lucknow, according to officials familiar with the project. The AI-based system will monitor traffic violations in real-time, identify risky driving behavior, and alert control centers automatically.
This is a major step toward smart traffic enforcement. Our aim is to reduce fatalities by identifying patterns and enforcing rules with precision,” said a senior transport department officer in Lucknow.
What the Pilot Includes
The system includes smart CCTV cameras, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), driver behavior analysis, and AI-generated alerts for overspeeding, wrong-lane driving, red-light jumping, and more. These tools will be integrated with police dashboards and traffic control centers.
We will rely on real-time alerts from the AI system to quickly respond to violations. This will also ensure transparency in traffic penalties,” said SP Traffic, Noida.
Pilot Locations & Expansion
The pilot is currently being implemented in select stretches of national and state highways in UP. The Yamuna Expressway, Agra-Lucknow Expressway, and Noida-Greater Noida Expressway have been identified as high-priority zones. Based on results from the trial phase, the system could expand to other cities like Kanpur, Ghaziabad, and Varanasi.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), Uttar Pradesh has consistently ranked among the top five states in terms of road accident deaths. In 2022 alone, over 21,000 fatalities were reported. The government hopes that AI-backed enforcement will bring these numbers down.
Data Privacy & Accuracy
Officials assured that the system is designed to respect individual privacy. Data will be used only for enforcement and analysis purposes, and violations will be recorded and stored in encrypted formats. Only authorized officials will have access to the footage.
It’s not just about punishing offenders but about saving lives. The technology gives us an opportunity to act before accidents happen,” said a technical advisor from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
Public Awareness Plans
To make this pilot a success, the transport department will also launch a road safety awareness campaign. Flyers, digital boards, and local outreach programs are being planned to educate drivers about the new system and its impact on traffic enforcement.
