Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh, July 30, 2025 — The Shahjahanpur district administration has launched a major effort to keep students safe by ordering the demolition of 855 unsafe school buildings. These structures, part of government-run primary and secondary schools, were found to be in poor condition, posing serious risks to students and staff. District Magistrate Dharmendra Pratap Singh announced the decision today, emphasizing that the safety of children comes first.
“We can’t take chances with lives,” Singh said during a meeting with the Basic Education Department. “These buildings are old and crumbling. Demolishing them is urgent and non-negotiable.” The move comes after inspections revealed that many of these structures were too weak to withstand regular use, especially during heavy rains or natural disasters.
Why This Matters
The decision follows growing concerns about aging school infrastructure across Uttar Pradesh. Many of these buildings, some decades old, have not been properly maintained. Recent monsoon rains have worsened the situation, with reports of leaking roofs and cracked walls. The Shahjahanpur administration’s action is being seen as a bold step to prevent tragedies like building collapses, which have claimed lives in other parts of the country.
Parents and teachers are relieved but cautious. “I’m glad they’re taking action,” said a parent of two primary school students. “But we need new classrooms built quickly. Kids shouldn’t miss out on their studies.”
