Hardoi – A disturbing case has shocked Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh, where a young woman has accused her friend Reena Bano and a man named Haider of luring her to a house, raping her, and pressuring her to convert to Islam. The incident, which allegedly took place on December 23, 2024, has sparked outrage and raised concerns about safety and trust in the society. Local police have arrested Reena Bano, while the search for Haider continues.
A Betrayal of Trust
The victim, a Hindu ITI student from Hardoi, alleges that Reena Bano, whom she considered a close friend, invited her to her home under pretenses. According to the First Information Report (FIR) filed by the victim, Reena lured her to the house, where Haider was waiting. The victim claims that Haider threatened her with a gun, raped her, and recorded a compromising video to blackmail her. Both Reena and Haider then allegedly pressured her to convert to Islam, threatening to release the footage if she refused.
The victim’s courage in reporting the incident to the police has led to swift action. Hardoi police confirmed that Reena Bano was taken into custody on July 12, 2025, following the FIR. Authorities are now conducting a manhunt for Haider, who remains at large. “We are investigating the case thoroughly and will ensure justice is served,” said a senior police official in Hardoi.
Broader Context of Concern
This incident has reignited discussions about crimes against women and allegations of forced conversions in Uttar Pradesh. While the state government has taken steps to address such issues, including passing the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, cases like this highlight the challenges in ensuring safety and justice. The victim’s family has demanded severe punishment for the accused, calling for a fast-tracked trial.
Ongoing Investigation and Support for the Victim
The police are working to gather evidence, including forensic analysis of the crime scene and any digital material related to the case. The victim is receiving support from authorities and counseling to help her cope with the trauma. Her identity is being protected as per legal guidelines.
The Hardoi district administration has assured the public that the case is a priority. “We are committed to ensuring the victim gets justice and that no one else has to go through such an ordeal,” said a district official.
