Meerut, Uttar Pradesh – A dramatic police encounter in Meerut’s Lisari Gate area on Sunday left Ujair, the prime suspect in the murder of a local cloth merchant, injured and in custody. The incident, rooted in a prior feud, unfolded in Khushhal Nagar when Ujair, son of Mobin, allegedly fired at police during an attempt to recover the weapon used in the crime. The police returned fire, hitting Ujair in the leg. Authorities recovered a .315 bore country-made pistol, one live cartridge, and one spent cartridge from the scene. This development marks a significant step in a case that has shaken the local community, with residents demanding justice for the victim, Abrar, a 42-year-old father gunned down in broad daylight.
A Murder That Shocked Lisari Gate
The chain of events began on July 26, 2025, in Radhna Wali Gali, Lisari Gate, when Abrar, a cloth merchant, was shot dead around noon. According to police reports, Ujair, along with four accomplices—Furkan, Mukim, Mobin, and Imran—allegedly attacked Abrar due to an old rivalry. The group shot him in full view of onlookers, leaving him critically injured. Abrar was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries. His son, Imran, filed a complaint, leading to a murder case being registered against the five suspects at Lisari Gate police station.
The Encounter: A Tense Standoff
Following the murder, Meerut police, under the direction of Senior Superintendent of Police Dr. Vipin Tada, launched a manhunt for the suspects. Acting on a tip-off, a team from Lisari Gate police station tracked Ujair to Khushhal Nagar on Sunday morning. According to a statement from the Circle Officer of Kotwali, the police took Ujair into custody for questioning and brought him to a water tank area to recover the murder weapon. During the operation, Ujair reportedly pulled a hidden pistol and fired at the police, prompting them to retaliate. A bullet struck Ujair in the leg, and he was subdued and arrested.
The police recovered the .315 bore pistol used in Abrar’s murder, along with cartridges, strengthening their case against Ujair. He was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment, where he remains under guard. “The operation was precise, and we ensured no officers were harmed,” the Circle Officer said, confirming that the investigation is ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects.
A Pattern of Violence in Meerut
This incident adds to a string of violent crimes in Meerut that have raised concerns about public safety. Earlier this year, a young man named As Mohammad was found strangled near a canal in Parikshitgarh, and a family of five was brutally murdered in Lisari Gate over a property dispute. These cases, reported by outlets like Amar Ujala and Dainik Bhaskar, highlight the challenges police face in curbing crime in the region. The encounter with Ujair, while a success, underscores the need for sustained efforts to address underlying issues like rivalries and access to illegal weapons.
What’s Next?
As Ujair recovers in hospital, police are interrogating him to gather leads on his accomplices. The recovered pistol and cartridges are being analyzed for forensic evidence, and authorities are urging the public to share any information that could aid the investigation.
