Lucknow – Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has raised alarm over what he calls a deliberate attempt to weaken India’s social fabric through illegal religious conversions. Speaking at an event in Lucknow today, the CM described these activities as a “calculated conspiracy” aimed at dividing communities and threatening national unity.
The Issue at Hand
CM Yogi’s remarks come in response to recent reports of illegal conversion activities in parts of Uttar Pradesh. He claimed that certain groups are targeting vulnerable communities, particularly those from scheduled castes, using fear, coercion, or financial incentives to change their religious beliefs. “This is not just about faith; it’s about breaking our society apart,” he said during a public address at Sheeshganj Gurdwara, where he participated in a Sandesh Yatra to promote religious harmony.
The CM pointed to specific cases in districts like Balrampur and Pilibhit, where authorities have arrested individuals allegedly involved in organized conversion efforts. “We’ve uncovered transactions worth over 100 crores in some cases, with funds coming from foreign sources,” he revealed, hinting at a larger network behind these activities.
Why It Matters
Illegal conversions have been a sensitive topic in India. Yogi Adityanath emphasized that such actions not only disrupt communal harmony but also pose a threat to national security. “We will not let anti-national elements succeed,” he declared, promising strict action against those involved.
The CM’s statements reflect a broader concern in Uttar Pradesh, where the government has been cracking down on what it calls “conversion rackets.” In recent years, the state has introduced laws like the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021, to curb forced or fraudulent conversions. These laws have been praised for protecting vulnerable groups.
What’s Next?
The Uttar Pradesh government has vowed to intensify its efforts against illegal conversions. CM Yogi announced that special task forces will be deployed to monitor suspicious activities, particularly in rural areas. “We will root out these anti-social elements,” he said, adding that the state is committed to protecting the dignity of all citizens.
As investigations continue, questions remain about how the government will balance its crackdown with the need to maintain communal harmony.
