Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh, August 9, 2025 – A heartbreaking incident has shaken Saidhari village in Lakhimpur Kheri, where a young Hindu Dalit man, Nitin, was brutally attacked and killed by the family of his Muslim girlfriend on August 2. The attack, driven by opposition to their interfaith relationship, has sparked outrage in the village.
According to reports, Nitin went to meet his girlfriend on a river bridge, accompanied by two friends. The girl’s family, disapproving of their relationship, ambushed him with sharp weapons. Nitin suffered severe injuries, including deep wounds to his neck, and was left unconscious in the river. His family found him in critical condition, with torn clothes and blood streaming from his injuries.
The tragedy escalated when Nitin’s family confronted the attackers. The confrontation turned violent, with the girl’s family allegedly attacking Nitin’s relatives with sticks. In the chaos, Nitin’s brother, Amit, was critically injured. Despite being rushed to a hospital and later referred to Lucknow, Amit succumbed to his injuries during the journey. Nitin’s father, Mahesh, and three members of the girl’s family-Nihal, Wasim, and Kaleem-were also injured in the clash.
Police arrived quickly to calm the situation and sent the injured to the district hospital. Authorities have arrested one suspect so far, and a case was registered on August 2, as confirmed by Additional Superintendent of Police, Pawan Gautam. The investigation is ongoing, with police promising swift action.
Nitin’s mother, Savitri, claimed the attack was a planned conspiracy targeting her sons because of their caste and religion. The incident has reignited discussions about honor killings and the challenges faced by interfaith couples in India.
