Meerut, August 27, 2025 – In a big push for better city living in Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath kicked off the state’s first Greenfield Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Township in Meerut earlier this month. This new project aims to mix homes, jobs, and transport in one smart setup, making life easier for people in the busy National Capital Region (NCR). The event on August 4 drew crowds and officials, marking a fresh start for urban growth in the area.
The township, built in Mohiuddinpur along the Delhi Road, covers about 295 hectares of land. It’s a huge deal with a total cost around ₹2,570 crore, including land buying and building work. The government has already given a no-interest loan of ₹1,258 crore to get things moving, with ₹809 crore handed over so far. The rest will come from bank loans. The Meerut Development Authority (MEDA) is handling the project, which pulls land from villages like Mohiuddinpur, Ikla, Chhajjupur, and Kayasth Gaondi.
What makes this township stand out is its TOD design. That means it’s built around easy travel, with rapid rail links nearby to cut down on car use and traffic jams. Buildings will have shops on the ground floor and homes or offices above, creating a lively mix. There will be multi-story spots for living, shopping, IT work, and more. It’s set up for everyone, from low-income families to those with more money, with affordable houses, schools, a medical college, and even government offices all in one place. This setup should create jobs, draw in businesses, and help the local economy grow.
During the foundation stone ceremony, CM Yogi arrived by helicopter from Saharanpur and was greeted with cheers. He dedicated the project to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, calling it a tribute to his vision for India’s growth. “This township will change Meerut’s face,” Yogi said, pointing out how it fits into bigger plans like the Meerut expressway and the state’s first sports university. He also talked about turning old trouble spots, like the criminal market in Sotiganj, into safe, thriving areas.
Yogi didn’t hold back on politics either. He slammed parties like Congress and Samajwadi Party for past mistakes, saying they divided people and protected wrongdoers. He brought up the 2008 Malegaon blast case, where he said innocents were blamed, and demanded an apology. “Truth always wins,” he added, tying it to the recent court rulings. But he kept the focus on progress, urging folks to buy local goods and support India’s self-reliance under PM Narendra Modi’s lead.
Since the launch, things are moving forward. The project is split into 31 sectors across two phases. Two sectors should be ready by November 2025, just in time for Diwali, when plots might go on sale. This comes as the state government sets aside ₹6,000 crore for more greenfield townships across Uttar Pradesh, with some launches planned before the festive season. It’s part of a bigger push started in 2023 to build new towns and boost housing.
Experts say this could ease pressure on crowded cities like Delhi by offering better options nearby. With quick links to Lucknow, soon just six hours away via a new expressway, and plans for tourism spots like Bhola Ki Jhaal, Meerut is gearing up for a boom. Yogi also mentioned fixing inner roads and redoing the Circuit House to make the city more welcoming.
As of now, no big hiccups have been reported, but locals are excited about the jobs and homes it promises. The township fits into Yogi’s goal of a crime-free, developed Uttar Pradesh, where growth reaches everyone. This project isn’t just bricks and roads, it’s about building a better future. With more townships on the way, Uttar Pradesh is stepping up its game in smart urban planning. Keep an eye out, Meerut might soon be the model for others to follow.
