Chandauli, Uttar Pradesh – A shocking incident has rocked Chandauli’s Alinagar area, where a lekhpal, identified as Vinod Kumar, was attacked by a group of assailants on July 18, over a land dispute. The assault, which left the revenue official injured, has sparked outrage among local lekhpal unions and raised concerns about the safety of government workers. The police are investigating, and tensions remain high in the community. Here’s the latest on this developing story.
What Happened?
The incident occurred around 4:00 p.m. on July 18, near a private hospital in Alinagar, under the Alinagar police station’s jurisdiction. Vinod Kumar, a 42-year-old lekhpal stationed at Mughalsarai tehsil, was reportedly inspecting a disputed plot of land in Jalalpur village when he was confronted by a group of individuals. According to police reports, the group, which included one named suspect, Anil Yadav, and several unidentified persons, accused Kumar of favoring one party in the ongoing land dispute. The confrontation quickly escalated, with the assailants allegedly attacking Kumar with sticks and fists, leaving him with injuries to his head and arms.
Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers also damaged Kumar’s motorcycle before fleeing the scene. Local residents alerted the police, who rushed Kumar to a nearby hospital for treatment. A complaint has been filed against Anil Yadav and others, with charges under IPC sections for assault and causing damage to public property. The police are working to identify the remaining suspects.
Police and Official Response
Superintendent of Police (SP) Ankur Agarwal confirmed the attack and stated, “We have received a complaint from the lekhpal, and a case has been registered. The named accused, Anil Yadav, is being questioned, and we are conducting raids to apprehend the others involved. We take attacks on government officials very seriously.” The police are reviewing CCTV footage from the area and have appealed to the public for information to aid the investigation.
The Chandauli Lekhpal Sangh has condemned the attack, calling it part of a growing pattern of harassment faced by revenue officials. In a statement, union leader Vinay Kumar Singh said, “Lekhpals work under immense pressure, and such attacks are unacceptable. We demand strict action against the culprits and better protection for our members.” The union has threatened to hold protests if the accused are not arrested soon.
A Broader Issue
This attack is not an isolated incident in Chandauli, where lekhpals have faced harassment and violence in the past. In June 2025, villagers in Jalalpur protested against a lekhpal, alleging collusion with land mafias, and similar tensions have been reported in other parts of the district. Land disputes, often fueled by outdated records and illegal encroachments, remain a persistent problem in rural Uttar Pradesh, putting revenue officials at risk.
The incident also highlights the need for better training and support for lekhpals, who often work in volatile situations without adequate protection. Recent protests by the Lekhpal Sangh in Chandauli and Hapur have called attention to the mental and physical toll of their jobs, with many citing excessive workloads and pressure from both officials and locals.
