Bahraich, August 14, 2025 – A heartbreaking incident has left the community of Nanpara, Bahraich, in shock after a 15-year-old Class 9 student collapsed and died during a race practice for Independence Day celebrations at Sa’aadat Inter College on Wednesday. The student, Himanshu, a resident of Bhaggapurwa village, was participating in a 100-meter sprint when the tragedy occurred.
According to school officials, Himanshu was among a dozen students practicing for the August 15 events. Witnesses said he finished third in the race but suddenly collapsed moments after crossing the finish line. Teachers and staff quickly tried to help, attempting to revive him for about 10 minutes before an ambulance arrived. He was rushed to the Nanpara Community Health Centre, but doctors declared him dead on arrival. Dr. Suresh Verma, who examined Himanshu, said the cause of death might be cardiac arrest, though a post-mortem report is needed to confirm.
Himanshu’s family is devastated. His elder brother, Shivam, told reporters that Himanshu had no known health issues and blamed the incident on the intense heat and lack of immediate medical aid. “The race was held in the scorching sun, and they didn’t inform us quickly enough,” Shivam said, adding that faster action might have saved his brother’s life. Himanshu’s father, Ramkumar, a paan shop owner, shared that his son dreamed of becoming an engineer. “He said he’d be back soon that morning,” Ramkumar said, his voice breaking. “It was his last goodbye.”
College principal Arvind Mishra expressed grief, stating the school acted swiftly by calling an ambulance. Nanpara police confirmed no formal complaint has been filed, but an inquiry is underway, led by the revenue inspector. The tragedy has cast a shadow over Independence Day preparations, raising concerns about safety during school sports activities, especially in extreme weather. The community mourns Himanshu, remembered as a bright student and talented athlete.
