Ambedkar Nagar, October 24, 2025 – In a small town tucked away in Uttar Pradesh’s Ambedkar Nagar district, a dark secret unfolded this week that’s left locals reeling. A viral video captured a doctor at Kusum Surgical Hospital in Jalalpur casually offering illegal abortions to anyone – married or unmarried – for a flat fee of 18,000 rupees. “Just bring them here,” he said without batting an eye. “We’ll take care of everything, no questions asked.” The clip, shared widely on social media, has sparked outrage and prompted swift action from health officials.
The hospital, run without a proper license for such procedures, became the center of attention after the video surfaced late Wednesday. In it, the hospital owner Saryunath Yadav – explains the process in cold detail: “I can cut the baby out piece by piece if needed.” He boasts about handling cases up to five months along, ignoring all medical and legal safeguards. Women in distress, often from poor families, are lured with promises of secrecy and speed, but experts warn these back-alley operations risk lives.
CMO’s Initial Response on the Viral Video
When the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Sanjay Kumar Shewaal was reached out to about the viral video, he shared some key details. “The clip came to my notice recently,” he explained. “After checking with the office records, it turned out to be linked to Kusum Surgical and Maternity Hospital. Suryanath Yadav is the owner there. He had put in an application for a license and listed himself as a BAMS doctor. He even attached a degree from an MBBS holder, but as per the rules, an MBBS practitioner can’t team up with just anyone for joint practice. That’s why we raised an objection right away. Still, we haven’t heard back from them on that.”
Further Comments from the CMO
The CMO went on to add, “I took a close look at the video, and it’s shocking- he’s openly saying that whether it’s a married woman or an unmarried one who shows up, he’ll handle the abortion for everyone. The charge is 18,000 rupees flat. He even mentions he can pull out the fetus by cutting it into pieces. No legitimate doctor can perform abortions without a proper license- it’s straight-up a criminal offense. And a BAMS doctor? Absolutely not allowed to touch this. It breaks every rule in the medical act.” He also mentioned that letters have been sent to the SDM of Jalalpur, the Circle Officer, and the medical superintendent at Jalalpur, instructing them to probe the matter thoroughly and take the necessary steps.
This isn’t just one bad apple. Ambedkar Nagar, like many rural pockets in UP, has seen a rise in unregulated clinics preying on vulnerable women. Poverty, lack of awareness, and stigma around unplanned pregnancies push desperate souls toward these shadows. “Many girls come from nearby villages, scared and alone,” shared Sunita, a local women who’s counseled dozens. “They think it’s safe because it’s quick and cheap. But infections, heavy bleeding – these places don’t care about aftercare.” National data backs her up: India’s abortion laws, under the MTP Act of 2021, allow terminations up to 24 weeks but only by certified providers. Violations can lead to jail time, yet enforcement lags in places like this.
In Ambedkar Nagar’s dusty lanes, where life moves slow, this wake-up call feels urgent. Women’s health isn’t a side note – it’s a lifeline. And when guardians of that lifeline turn predators, the whole community pays the price.
