A shocking double murder in Lucknow’s Alambagh area has left the area shaken. On the night of July 2, 2025, a man named Jagdeep Kumar, aged 42, allegedly stabbed his in-laws, Anant Ram (73) and Asha Devi (71), to death in Garhi Kanaura village. The brutal attack happened in front of his wife, Poonam Devi, after a heated argument over her refusal to return to their matrimonial home. Jagdeep, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, was caught by neighbors and handed over to the police.
The Tragic Incident
On July 2, 2025, around 9 p.m., Jagdeep Kumar visited his in-laws’ home in Gadhi Kanaura village under the Alambagh Police station to convince his estranged wife, Poonam Devi, to return with him. The couple, married since 2015, had been separated for two years due to ongoing domestic disputes, with Poonam living with her parents. When her parents, Anant Ram and Asha Devi, refused to let her go, Jagdeep lost his temper. He pulled a knife from his bag and stabbed both in-laws, killing them in front of Poonam, who sustained minor injuries. Neighbors heard screams, caught Jagdeep as he tried to flee, and handed him over to the police. The blood-stained knife was recovered, and the victims were rushed to Lokbandhu Hospital, where they were declared dead.
Background of the Dispute
Jagdeep and Poonam’s marriage had been troubled for years, marked by domestic abuse. Poonam left Jagdeep in April 2023, moving to her parents’ home in Alambagh with their two children. Jagdeep, originally from Rajasthan and unemployed, lived in a rented house in Nishatganj. His visit on July 2 was reportedly to resolve the dispute, but it escalated into violence.
Victims and Their Lives
Anant Ram, 73, and Asha Devi, 71, were respected residents of Garhi Kanaura. Anant was a retired worker, and Asha was a homemaker. They were supporting their daughter Poonam and her children, offering them a safe home after her troubled marriage. Their deaths have left the family devastated.
Police Investigation and Arrest
The Alambagh police acted swiftly, arresting Jagdeep Kumar on the night of the incident. A murder case has been registered, and the blood-stained knife was seized as evidence. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Ashish Srivastava confirmed that Jagdeep was under the influence of alcohol during the attack. The police are investigating whether the act was premeditated, as Jagdeep carried a knife in his bag. They are also questioning Poonam and her neighbors for more details. Jagdeep is in custody, and the investigation is ongoing to ensure justice for Anant Ram and Asha Devi. The police have promised a thorough probe to uncover any additional motives or circumstances.
