Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, August 7, 2025 – In a significant step to support differently abled students, the Uttar Pradesh government, under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has doubled the monthly maintenance allowance for students residing in residential facilities. The allowance has increased from ₹2,000 to ₹4,000 per month. This move, announced by Minister of State for Divyangjan Empowerment Narendra Kashyap, aims to ease financial burdens and improve the quality of life for these students.
The decision benefits thousands of differently-abled students across Uttar Pradesh who are enrolled in residential schools and hostels. The increased allowance is designed to help cover essential expenses like food, clothing, and educational materials, ensuring students can focus on their studies without financial stress. “This is a big relief for us,” said Priya, a visually impaired student. “The extra money will help me buy books and other necessities.”
The scheme is part of the state’s broader efforts to empower differently-abled individuals through initiatives like the Samarth Programme, which also provides stipends and escort allowances. The Yogi government has been recognized for its focus on inclusive education, with programs like Operation Kayakalp transforming basic education infrastructure across the state. The increased allowance reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring no student is left behind due to financial constraints.
To qualify for the allowance, students must be enrolled in recognized residential facilities for differently-abled individuals and meet eligibility criteria set by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities. Applications can be submitted through district welfare offices or online via the department’s portal, requiring documents like a disability certificate, Aadhaar card, and proof of residency. The funds are disbursed directly to students’ bank accounts through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system, ensuring transparency and efficiency.
For students the increased allowance means more than just money. It shows government cares about them. The government encourages eligible students to apply promptly to benefit from the increased allowance. This move is a step toward building a more inclusive Uttar Pradesh, ensuring differently-abled students have the support they need to thrive. As the festive season approaches, this financial boost is set to bring smiles to many young faces across the state.
